Alice bands are back
Alice bands are back in fashion, and a number of young Puneites are sporting them. The crowning glory of the '80s, they suddenly disappeared from public view. However, alice bands have made a comeback once again. They can be seen everywhere, right from ramps to neighbourhood streets.
While Bollywood actresses have sported alice bands on and off screen, the men are giving the band its due only now. In the '80s, 'the boss' Bruce Springsteen sported the headband, making it popular among men. In recent times, David Beckham kicked off the trend again. Among Bollywood stars, Abhishek Bachchan was photographed sporting his metal hair band on a number of occasions. Others like Aftab Shivdasani, Suneil Shetty, and Zayed Khan followed suit.
Naturally, Pune is not too far behind. Most college campuses have an equal number of boys and girls showing off their colourful alice bands. While girls go for the bling, boys prefer to keep it simple with metal hair band in black or silver, or cloth bands in subtle colours.
The girls not only look at the bands from the utility point of view. In fact, the wide range of alice bands in metal, cloth, with dimante, function as a good accessory with outfits. Harsha Barse, an MA student, affirms, "Not only does it keep my hair in place, it also makes a fashion statement. I like the vibrant colours and polka-dotted designs. You get a variety to choose from. But, not everyone can carry themselves with it."
Manasi Mulherkar, a hotel management student, is also hooked on to the metal alice bands. She says, "I recently started liking the metal bands. I got one as a gift and, now, I wear it most of the time. We aren't allowed to wear bands in college, but these don't look that obvious ."
Raghavendra Singh, a commerce student , also thinks that sporting a hair band is the 'in' thing for guys. But, he has an advice to all those men with long hair, who want to keep their mane in place with a band. "Though bands look cool, they don't suit all guys. You need to carry them off well. Personally, I prefer the metal bands in black," he confirms.
So, go quick, jump on to the bandwagon before it goes out of fashion again.
